dependence and consistency in dynamic choice under uncertainty : the case of anticipated regret ”

چکیده

We examine if and to what extent choice dispositions can allow dependence on contexts and maintain consistency over time, in a dynamic environment under uncertainty. We focus on a ‘minimal’ case of context dependence, opportunity dependence due to being affected by anticipated regret. There are two sources of potential inconsistency, one is arrival of information and the other is changing opportunities. First, we go over the general method of resolution of potential inconsistency, by taking any kinds of inconsistency as given constraints. Second, we characterize a class of choice dispositions that are consistent to information arrival but may be inconsistent to changing opportunities. Finally, we consider the full requirement of dynamic consistency and show that it necessarily implies independence of choice opportunities. ∗This is a substantial revision of the paper previously circulated as ‘Dynamic choice with anticipated regret.’ I thank conference/seminar participants at RUD 2006, ES-NASM 2008, Texas A&M and Yokohama National University for helpful comments. Part of this work was done during my visit to the Institute of Economic Research, Kyoto University. I gratefully appreciate their hospitality. All errors are mine.

Relationship between impulsive choice and emotional distress with students’ procrastination: mediating role of anticipated regret and consideration of future consequences

Given the wide prevalence of procrastination and delaying tasks and the need to identify factors affecting this problem, present study aimed to investigate the mediating role of anticipated regret and consideration of future consequences in the relationship between impulsive choice and emotional distress with procrastination. In an analytical cross-sectional study, 400 students were selected th...

Risk Route Choice Analysis and the Equilibrium Model under Anticipated Regret Theory

The assumption about travellers’ route choice behaviour has major influence on the traffic flow equilibrium analysis. Previous studies about the travellers’ route choice were mainly based on the expected utility maximization theory. However, with the gradually increasing knowledge about the uncertainty of the transportation system, the researchers have realized that there is much constraint in ...

Regret aversion and opportunity dependence

This paper provides an axiomatic model of decision making under uncertainty in which the decision maker is driven by anticipated ex-post regrets. Our model allows both regret aversion and likelihood judgement over states to coexist. Also, we characterize two special cases, minimax regret with multiple priors that generalizes Savage’s minimax regret, and a smooth model of regret aversion.

Government and Central Bank Interaction under Uncertainty: A Differential Games Approach

Abstract Today, debt stabilization in an uncertain environment is an important issue. In particular, the question how fiscal and monetary authorities should deal with this uncertainty is of much importance. Especially for some developing countries such as Iran, in which on average 60 percent of government revenues comes from oil, and consequently uncertainty about oil prices has a large effec...

Dynamic choice with anticipated regret

This paper provides an axiomatic model of dynamic choice in which the decision maker is driven by anticipated ex-post regret. In the presence of dynamic inconsistency problem due to both arrival of new information and changing choice opportunities, we characterize a sophisticated behavior that plays backward induction. Moreover, we characterize consistent belief updating, which rules out the in...
